Dedicated to revitalizing three neglected urban sites in Belgrade through civic engagement, artistic practice, and sustainable design.
In Belgrade, the effects of the climate crisis are becoming increasingly tangible: Dense urban areas are becoming heat islands, and 2024 saw a record number of tropical nights. One of the starting points for Belgrade Urban Oases is a map of heat islands developed by Dr. Ivan Simić at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. His visualization exposes the stark thermal contrasts between sealed, overheated neighborhoods and cooler, green pockets of shade: a difference of up to six degrees.
Building on this analysis, students from the Faculty of Architecture developed a spatial intervention: In the courtyard of the Julino Brdo housing estate (Oasis 2), they installed shade sails to create a cooler out-door space in one of Belgrade’s overheated neighborhoods. The intervention embodies a climate-resilienturban practice in a city that, under neoliberal transformation and ongoing paving over, is steadily losinggreen and shaded public spaces.
